Awaycation Summer 2024 - Day 8 Part One

After two days of up hill and down dale today's drive to end up at the campsite at Cervera de Pisuerga needed amending.

I cut off an entire loop that would take us through the western Picos d'Europa and to Cervera from Potes.

In the end the cut down route took us from Oyembre to Panes, then Potes and Riaño.

I re-arranged the waypoints but made an error in not simply re-siting them. More of that later as we went the wrong way, a few times.

First stop Lidl. We have decided to self cater rather than eat out. Even with "menu de la dia" hovering around €19. It was actually €12 in one non tourist place we passed through.

Once Lidled up we were off. The A8 then N621 the roads for most of today...

Little did we know or see on Google maps that from Panes to Potes, and for almost the entire distance, they were widening the road through the Asón valley. It took over an hour to make the journey.

The scenery is fantastic. In places it's like a mini Grand Canyon. The river at the bottom and the glaciers must have gouged this great gap in granite.

Despite Lidling, we found the parkup behind the Lupa supermarket It doesn't say you can't overnight there, but apart from some levelish spaces it's a slope too far even for our ramps.

We popped into the supermarket for some added items.

Our next stop was in the town itself. We ended up in two spaces in a car park near the bus station.

As we exited to walk around it started spitting. I took the Canon and fired off a few. Photos to follow.

We took shelter under an umbrella at the Sideria and had a coffee until the rain subsided.

Then we were off... Riaño the first planned stop.
