Awaycation Summer 2024 - Day 9 & 10

The drive today was the opposite to the last few days. Very few mountains. Cervera is around d 1000m but the drive across country to the A67 was relatively flat!

It wouldn't be our trip if there wasn't a road closure. The A67 was chosen to help us cover 200kms quickly. In the end we encountered more roadworks and ended up on the adjacent N611 for around 30kms. It wasn't as bad as it could be as we were still able to do "our" speed.

No particular stops today. Just get to Avila . We arrived mid afternoon. Entered the aire with the code and parked in spot 19. Then after a "brew" we set off to have a look at the walls!

Claire and I have been here before in 2014. We were on Dora the Triumph Explorer that time and we stayed in the Parador.

The walk from the aire to the city is about 400 yards. We can see the walls from the van as they tower over the surrounding area.

The steps up there are a killer and with a reluctant dog even more hard work. We found the old market square and settled down for a beer and free tapas, although here it's called pinchos.

The evening was spent reading and attempting to watch Clarkson's Farm on the TV. The free WIFI wasn't able to stream very well.

Up late as it's an R&R break from driving. After breakfast we went into town for a walk. Reggie marginally better than yesterday. Had a coffee and then picked up some bread and stuff for lunch. The streets have lots of small shops and local grocers and we like to shop in them when we can.

Later after both of us had a siesta we left Reggie in the moho and we went back up. The plan was to see a bit more of the old city. In the end after a stop at the Vermouth bar and a spot of pinchos we set off back.

We stopped Panaderia Iselma Munoz and bought some cakes make with egg yokes.

In their window they had gingerbread nuns!

Just a couple of photos today.....

Dinner tonight self-cater again. Chicken and chips done in the monkey and air fryer.

Tomorrow? We head south past Toledo and then around to the east..... Join us then.
